March All Weather Photo Walk!

This past Saturday we met up at Coasters Coffee in New Westminster for our second photo walk this year. Sadly the rain also showed up, same as the January photo walk –  poured down during the middle of the walk, then got sunny toward the very end.

I have a feeling I jinxed myself a little too. Earlier that morning I loaded my Leica IIIf with HP5, cut the leader and watched the red dots spin as I advanced it onto the spool. I felt confident it was shooting correctly…this was my first mistake, I know better than that, but I am ever hopeful… Now here’s where the jinx occurred, at the start of our stroll one of our walkers commented on how he’d been feeling the temptation of a Barnack Leica, to this comment I replied absolutely not, no one should spend money on a Barnack, they ALWAYS BREAK, (unless a person has IIIg money then perhaps go ahead give it a whirl but who finds themselves with that in this economy). I went on to state that I was lucky, so far my IIIf had never broken. Famous last words… my ‘reliable’ Leica IIIf decided that was going to be the day it chose to stop advancing. I was obviously chatting and enjoying myself too much to notice until I got home. Thank goodness I had my trusty iPhone with me and I do always take a iPhone photo of something if I really want the photo, because this isn’t the first time an old camera has burned me. Also I may want to text the photo to interested parties that weren’t lucky enough to join me on the photo walk! There was one photo I am a little heartbroken over not having actually taken on that roll. A kitty cat umbrella, I did shoot it on my iPhone but an iPhone lens is no Nippon Kogaku Japan Nikkor – H.C 5cm f2, and it didn’t frame as well with the egregiously wide iPhone lens. Regardless of all that, I really enjoyed the company of our New Westminster photo walk group and the New Westminster location for the photo walk. It had a nice mix of old and new architecture, a market to hide in case it rains really hard, some sweet thrift stores, and one video game store which I b-lined to straight after the walk!
