Canon F1 New

Canon F1 New

The Canon F1 New, introduced in 1981, is a professional grade 35mm film camera that built on the legacy of the original Canon F1. Its a favourite among film enthusiasts for its robust brass build, modular design, and compatibility with Canon’s FD lens system.

The F1 New is a tank of a camera, weighing around 1.7 Ilbs. Its solid brass body, often coated in a matte grey or black finish, is designed to withstand extreme conditions, from -30°C to 60°C and up to 90% humidity. The wear on its black coating reveals a golden brass patina, which many photographers find aesthetically pleasing, adding character over time. The camera’s modular design is a standout feature. It offers interchangeable viewfinders (AE Finder for Aperture priority mode, (speed finder for fast shooting, focusing screens (13 types for various metering patterns, and accessories like motor drives and winders. This modularity allows customization for specific shooting needs, such as sports or macro photography. However the weight and bulk can be taxing on your hands for all day shooting.

The F1 New features a hybrid electro mechanical titanium focal plane shutter with speeds from bulb to 1/2000. It operates mechanically at speeds down to 1/125s, ensuring functionally without batteries. The F1 New supports a vast range of lenses ( 134 total from 7.5mm Fisheye to 1200mm telephoto) including high-quality L series lenses. FD lenses are affordable today, often under $200 depending on the lens like the canon 50mm F1.4, which delivers sharp images and creamy bokeh.

The F1 New has 2 modes: manual mode which is straightforward with match needle metering visible in the viewfinder, and aperture priority mode. Aperture priority requires the AE Finder which is the most common finder among all F1 New cameras.

The camera is an absolute joy to shoot for photography enthusiasts. Its shutter delivers a satisfying ”clunk” and the camera feels stable in the hand despite its weight. Many photographers praise its reliability without failure. The camera paired with the Canon 50mm f1.4 produces sharp, vibrant images with excellent dynamic range, and is one of my go to combinations.

The Canon F1 New remains a sought after camera for film photographers and collectors. Prices vary, but a body with a 50mm lens can range between $500-$700, depending on condition. Its durability ensures it can last for quite a long time, making it a worthwhile investment for serious photographers. However, beginners might find it intimidating compared to simpler cameras like the Canon AE-1 Program, which offer similar FD lens compatibility at a lower cost.

For photographers invested in Canon FD lenses, the Canon F1 New is unmatched for its professional grade build and versatility. The camera is ideal for experienced photographers who value durability, modularity, and manual control. It’s less suited for beginners due to its weight, cost and learning curve. If you’re looking for a reliable, professional SLR that pairs with affordable, high quality FD lenses and can withstand years of use, The F1 New is a phenomenal choice.
