SUMMARY:Summer 2024 Analogue Workshops
DESCRIPTION:The analogue workshops at Beau return for another summer! We will be doing cyanotype printing\, cyanotype toning and pinhole workshops this summer\, and there is a possibility that a few others will be added. See the descriptions for each process on our blog post\, and sign up to secure a spot! \nAnalogue processes are perfect for those who want to work more slowly and create unique images rather than hurry through image making with digital. We still love digital\, but there is something special about making things by hand that analogue processes really embrace. Making an image that you can hold in your hand\, hang on a wall or give as a gift is fun and satisfying. The processes we do in the workshops are also rooted in photographic history so we are going really retro with them here! In the workshops\, you will learn about the historical uses and see how easy it is to do them on your own. Join us and make images\, ask questions\, and meet fun people! \nCyanotype Workshop\nJuly 6\, 2024\n2:15 – 4:15 at Beau Photo \nCyanotype Toning Workshop\nJuly 20\, 2024\n2:15 – 4:15 at Beau Photo \nPinhole Camera Workshop\nAugust 17\, 2024\n2:15 – 4:30 at Beau Photo\nRegister here – https://beau_pinhole_camera_workshop.eventbrite.ca \nFor more information and to register\, see the blog post about these workshops here – https://www.beauphoto.com/summer-2024-analogue-workshops/

SUMMARY:An evening with Alex Waterhouse-Hayward at Beau Photo
DESCRIPTION:Alex will talk about his work and show slides of his most recent explorations with new technology in comparison to traditional slides. \nRegistration is required as seating is limited. Register on Eventbrite – https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/an-evening-with-alex-waterhouse-hayward-at-beau-photo-tickets-1015579394307 \nPhotographically Vancouver is in a privileged position. It has at least 3 working photolabs\, several camera stores\, and we must not forget that jewel\, Beau Photo. It is partly a museum of film cameras; it has the latest available films\, plus all kinds of modern digital equipment. And the people working there know their stuff. \nIn my projection of 6×7 cm Mamiya RB-67 slides\, I will be using a Linhof projector with a Leica lens. Those present will have to decide how they compare with digital ones. \nA photographer is as good as his last photographs. Using 20th & 21st century technology I will show new stuff made possible with products that I buy at Beau Photo like inkjet transparency material. With my Epson scanner I can convert colour\, negs\, b+w negs and digital photographs into slides. My projection should be a short one but I will make myself available to answer questions. \nThe bulk of my slides will be portraits that I have taken in Vancouver since 1977. \nAlex Waterhouse-Hayward started as a stills photographer shooting CBC drama and variety shows; but magazines were his passion. Since the late 70s he has shot for almost every magazine and newspaper in Canada\, as well as Time\, New York Times\, Vanity Fair\, Stern\, the Guardian\, Globe & Mail and many more. In 2001\, Canada Post issued four rose stamps that he photographed. He has shown at the Simon Patrich Gallery\, the Exposure Gallery and the Presentation House (now The Polygon Gallery). For 13 years he taught photography for the Outreach Program of Emily Carr University and has also taught at Focal Point. He is currently collaborating work with Vancouver based Argentine painters Nora Patrich and Juan Manuel Sanchez.

SUMMARY:Reflecting Time - Vintage Camera Photo Walk
DESCRIPTION:Taking photographs with vintage cameras can be both unpredictable and magical. Whether using box cameras\, folders\, or other historic treasures\, all can connect you to a time when everyday people first picked up a camera to record their lives. Before George Eastman created the Kodak camera in 1888\, photography was a complicated process mainly left to professionals. When the Kodak  came out\, people cold easily take photographs of everything around them\, and send in the film for processing and printing. The cost of $25 for the camera\, and $10 for processing and reloading was still more than many people could afford though. When the first Brownie camera was introduced in 1900 for $1\, photography really became available to the masses. This was the start of an era of visually recording everything. Other manufacturers brought out different cameras and films\, camera clubs gathered\, and everyone wanted a photograph of something. Today we still use many of these cameras. They are easy to use\, and can transport you to a time when photography was a new activity for people. For a great history of the Brownie camera\, including how a Canadian author and illustrator was the source of the Brownie name\, and who the original Brownies of British and Scottish folklore were\, read this paper “George Eastman’s Modern Stone-Age Family: Snapshot Photography and the Brownie’ by Mark Oliver (you may have to log in through a library or educational institution or create your own free account). It’s quite fascinating! \nJoin us for a photo walk with vintage cameras and learn some history\, how to choose a camera that will work\, and tricks to using them. Bring your own camera and show it off\, or use one of our cameras\, and record your environment through a historic lens. You will get a roll of film from Ilford to load into your camera. The accompanying exhibition ‘Reflecting Time’ will be on display April 23 – June 14 at the Beau Photo gallery space.  Submit an image to the exhibition from the walk\, or from another outing with your vintage camera. \nSpace is limited! SUMMARY:Shaped by Time - An Exhibition by Michael Cox
DESCRIPTION:June 18th – August 9th\nBeau Photo Gallery Space\nOpening Reception\nJune 26th 4:30 – 6:30pm \nCome by Beau and see the latest exhibition in our gallery space – \nErosion\, silt\, landslide – the geography of British Columbia is continually and dramatically altered in sudden and subtle ways. In the Chilcotin\, in the Fraser and Thompson canyons\, below UBC\, and along the Fraser estuary\, apparently stable landscapes are never as still as we perceive. This is mirrored\, as I observe with some detachment\, in the abrasions and defoliations of my aging body\, its own processes of erosion. \nThere has never been a time when I haven’t had a camera of one make or another in my hands. Whether selling cameras or books\, working on film sets or directing shorts\, even driving buses – photography has remained the lens through which I make sense of the world\, both root and compass\, anchoring me in purpose and understanding. \nThe images in this exhibition were made in 2024 with a Fujifilm GFX medium format digital camera\, edited with Capture One using film emulations by Mastin Labs\, and printed (by myself) on an Epson P800 with paper from Red River\, Ilford\, and Epson. \nMichael Cox

SUMMARY:Overpaint Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Nicole and Meghan at the store for an evening of exploring your creative side with your printed photos. This will be a very casual\, fun event where everyone is welcome to try out different artistic mediums used to overpaint on printed photos. \nWhat is overpainting? In this context\, we are referring to overpainting as taking an existing print of your photo and applying watercolour or acrylic paint to it. Or perhaps drawing on it with markers or ink. This is the main focus of this event\, however there are no rules here and you are most welcome to try out (almost) any type of overpainting or collage you would like! Feel free to bring any of your own supplies you would like to try out and share with the group. (Please no oil paints\, or anything that has an offensive smell though!) \nTicket price includes two of your own photos that we will print for you to use in the workshop\, as well as a range of art supplies to work with. Refreshments will also be provided. This event will take place in the store\, but if it is nice we may also spend some time outside. \nOnce you have purchased a ticket you will be instructed to send in two files for us to print for you to use at the workshop. The paper we will be using has been kindly provided by Hahnemuhle.

SUMMARY:Analogue Workshop Series - Pinhole Cameras
DESCRIPTION:We are giving a workshop in pinhole camera making on July 5th! The workshop will cover the basic principles of pinhole cameras\, and how to develop photographic paper. You will build your own pinhole camera and then we’ll go out and make some exposures and develop the paper negatives. Each participant should be able to create 2 or 3 images during the workshop\, and will go home with the skills to continue taking pinhole photos. This workshop will hopefully inspire you to start a collection of pinhole cameras and get out to make images with them. \nPinhole photography is writing with light at its most basic. All that is required to make an image is a light tight container or space (a camera obscura) and a small hole that lets light in. To record that image\, some sort of light sensitive material is put into the camera\, and the light coming through the pinhole creates an impression of the subject the camera is looking at. The properties of light passing through a pinhole have been known for centuries\, and have been documented as early as 500BC. Pinholes have been used to observe solar eclipses\, as drawing aids\, and as entertainment when the image is projected onto a large screen. Lenses were also used in camera obscuras as they let in more light. Since a way to fix the projected image was discovered in the 1820s and photography was born\, people have experimented with pinhole cameras. Today we make pinhole cameras with everything from a cardboard box to washing machines\, beer cans\,  and even our own bodies. Using containers and objects that have had a previous use simplifies the process even further\, adds another creative dimension\, and is also a more sustainable alternative to using a conventional camera. \nThere is a fee of $20 for this workshop to cover the materials. Space is limited to 8 participants Registration will open on June 7th at 9am on Eventbrite.\nhttps://beau_pinhole_2025.eventbrite.ca

SUMMARY:Analogue Workshop Series - Lumen Printing
DESCRIPTION:Lumen printing is the process of using photographic paper or film and contact printing negatives or objects onto the film in the sun. These images aren’t developed\, instead relying on the light sensitive quality of the emulsion that causes it to change when exposed to bright light. Beautiful outlines and tones are achieved with this easy process. It’s also a great way to use expired paper and film that might otherwise be discarded. \nThere will be a $20 fee to cover materials. Space is limited to 8 participants so register early!

SUMMARY:Analogue Workshop Series - Cyanotype printing and toning with plants
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]We are holding the cuyanotype printing and toning workshop on the same day this year. They are separate workshops so you need to resister for both if you would like to attend both. You will be able to use the prints you make in the printing workshop for toning. If you already have cyanotypes\, you can register for just the toning workshop if you like\, or just take the cyanotype printing workshop if you are short on time. \n  \nCyanotype Printing \nAugust 16th 2:15 – 4:15\nAt Beau Photo \nThe cyanotype process was invented in 1842 by Sir John Herschel. As their name suggests\, cyanotypes are a beautiful blue colour\, and are most often printed on watercolour paper. Learn how to make these beautiful images yourself. Printing cyanotypes is very easy to do at home and is a good starting point for trying other alternative processes. In this workshop you will learn about the different papers and other surfaces that are suitable for cyanotype printing\, using negatives and objects to create images\, how to coat and expose paper\, different processing techniques\, and a little about the history of cyanotype printing. You will leave with a print you’ve made yourself and the knowledge to be able to continue the process on your own. \nThere is a fee of $20 for this workshop to cover the materials. Space is limited to 8 participants Register here – https://beau_cyanotype_2025.eventbrite.ca\n \n  \nCyanotype Toning With Plants \nAugust 16th 4:30 – 6:30\nAt Beau Photo \nCyanotypes are a beautiful blue colour\, but blue isn’t the only colour you can get from them. In this workshop you will learn about toning cyanotypes to get other tones like brown and turquoise. Using various plant material\, we will tone cyanotypes and talk about the many ways we can experiment with the process and affect the final colours. \nYou will need to bring a few of your cyanotype prints that you are willing to experiment with. Up to 8×10 only please! Slightly overexposed prints tend to work best. \nThere is a fee of $20 for this workshop to cover the materials.
